PARROQUIA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOS ÁNGELES

The Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles has its origin in an adobe chapel dedicated to the Virgin of the Angels, built in 1580 in the Guerrero neighborhood. Over the years, the temple was destroyed and rebuilt on several occasions, mainly due to floods. It was not until 1745 that it was rebuilt with masonry to guarantee its durability. In 1776 earthquakes caused significant damage, leading to the laying of the foundation stone of a new sanctuary in 1777. Since then, it has undergone numerous modifications until it reached its present form. It was listed as a Historic Monument by INAH in 1932.

After the 2017 earthquake, the parish was severely affected, showing significant damage and structural instability. The temple’s dome partially collapsed, and three of the eight oculi, along with their stained glass windows, were destroyed.

The parish was selected as a beneficiary of the 2024 National Reconstruction Program. The work commissioned to e c o included the reconstruction of the oculi, the discharge arches, the dome, and the installation of the lantern.
